Why do people with Parkinson need MobilAlarm?
The German Parkinson self-help group reports:
The Parkinson disease is a constantly increasing neurological dysfunction
caused by the death of neurones in specific parts of the brain (substantia
nigra) responsible for body movements. In an early stage, the disease
can be controlled by medical treatment. However, particularly during
advanced stages of the disease, people suffer from sudden unexpected
emergency situations: loss of control of limbs, low mobility, dizziness,
pain and panic situations, psychoses and actual disorientation, and
downfalls which may lead to broken limbs . Such situations are often
a consequence of motoric shortcomings or the experience of drugs running
low. This requires on the spot contact to friends or relatives or to
the treating physician or help from an emergency service. Every fourth
Parkinson patient is accustomed with panic and the fear to die in emergency
situations. This is especially the case when patients are alone outside
of their own home or have depressions. The Parkinson self-help group
states: “Parkinson patients could be very mobile but abhor from going
out because of the risk to come in a life-threatening situation. Based
on this a mobile alarm system is urgently required.”
